Six years ago I posted an entry called: Book Review Opening Lines That 100% Guarantee I Won't Be Reading The Book." (The title must have got cut off when I switched to Movable Type.)

I've been making similar lists in my head nearly every Sunday since, but lately I've been a little overwhelmed by the amount of reading material entering the house faster than I can read so I have a untidy stack of NYT Book Review sections moldering in a corner. While going through today's paper* I resolved to toss all the old ones out and start fresh. Each paper gets 6 days in the house then it's history, out with the recycling on Friday.

But I want to make an effort to actually read it while it's here; thus, the return of the Opening Lines game. This week wasn't bad, there were only two bad lines plus one insufferable title.

1. "The Whole Earth Catalog,..."
2. "Cees Nooteboom's dreamy and self-conscious new novel, translated from the Dutch..."
3. Now Voyagers: The Night Sea Journey
Some Divisions of the Saga of Mawrdew Czgowchwz, Oltrano. Authenticated by Persons Represented Therein. Book One.

*Rex doesn't seem to think this is egregious which is weird because it SO IS. 4D: Sen. Specter and others. Answer: Arlens. Yeah, but abbreviation in the clue always means abbreviation in the answer. This threw me off forever. What the F, Shortz?
