Zuckerlanders have cast their votes.
Chris went across the street a little before 8am because he has a real job that he likes to get to before 10am. It took him a little over an hour to come back so I decided to wait until after 10am because I figured all the 9 to 5-ers would be cleared out by then — it always works as a gym strategy. However, it seems as if there are plenty of slackers in the neighborhood who I guess avoid both the gym and traditional work schedules because the line was enormous.
It moved...I wouldn't say quickly, but steadily and with large jumps forward. Chris had told me that our district only had one machine so I resigned myself to a long wait. There was a lot of misinformation spread by people leaving the polls that if you knew your district you could just bypass the sorting table and jump on the appropriate line inside. My deep-seated of XXX rule-following kept me in the line just in case and sure enough a few minutes after a wad of people left to go straight in they all returned. The fantastic part is that no one freaked out, yelled or left, they just went back to their places in line and the people still there let them back in.
I had a book and my iPhone so I didn't really notice it'd been about 45 minutes by the time I was in the building and could see the sorting table. The poll workers occasionally called out district numbers to move people forward and I was surprised to eventually hear my number and get whisked off to the table inside. As I stepped up to give my name, I thought I recognized the guy who was right before me, but I'm always wrong so I dismissed it. Anyway, it was time to drift into my fear of authority paranoia mode.
Just as I'm always sure the airline or the car rental place will lose my reservation leaving me high and dry, impotent with rage, I was convinced my name would mysteriously be absent from the rolls, even though I had received a card in the mail and checked my status online. But I was there, she opened the book right to my name, all I had to do was sign my name. I took my voter card and walked to the back of the short line for the booth, where I came face to face with Will Arnett who was in fact the guy who signed the book right before me.
I took my place in line behind GOB and twittered it up like an ahole, waiting for my turn. A couple minutes later another guy walked up to him and I was like, no way, you are not going to talk to him while he waits to vote and then I realized it wasn't a fan, it was John Slattery. I heard Arnett speak to him and if I closed my eyes it was just like listening to the episode of 30 Rock where Jack and Devon have their "talking like this" contest.
I came, I saw celebrities, I voted.
Damn, I'm glad you're back. You have been muchly missed.
